Canterbury Community Trust Earthquake Fund Launch
In 2013 The Canterbury Community Trust, which distributes funds for charitable, cultural, philanthropic and recreational benefits in Canterbury, Nelson, Marlborough and the Chatham Islands, established a $25 million fund to support the re-establishment of the social infrastructure of Christchurch following the devastating earthquakes there.
The Trust wanted a focal point to announce the launch of the fund which could also help symbolise the work being carried out in the Christchurch community for the rebuild.
Drawing on the work of Hungarian environmental artist Christo and working with Christchurch conceptual artist Peter Majendie and his team, the Convergence team helped design and produce a spectacular installation at the site of the former ManCan House on the Corner of Cambridge Terrace and Manchester Street.
The tree was wrapped with hi-viz material, providing a strong image of the dominant colour of the rebuild. The tree was the star of a high profile launch function where speakers included the Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee and Arahia Bennett, the Chief Executive Officer Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu. Convergence conducted interviews with the main speakers and packaged this up into a digital file for the Trust to send to its partners and have on its website.
The fund has seen money distributed throughout the Trust’s region for Social Housing, a Ngai Tahu Partnership Fund, a special Community Rebuild Fund, an Event Development Fund as well as a Regional Fund.
